Content Strategy: Checkpoint Before Proposal

Here is a practical tool we use to help determine and define the scope of a content strategy mission with a client. These questions help us to spot large-scale content strategy issues that may determine long term tactic needs. This is used initially as a checkpoint at a very basic level to identify client’s expectations and, on our side, a customized service proposal.
In this checkpoint list, the central topic is, of course, content. Which content-related features client uses on his on line interfaces ? Which features they intend to add at mid or long term ? Are there forms & other e-commerce transaction modules on the website ? Will there be User Generated Contents (UGC) or not – why not ? Which type of Content Management System (CMS) do they presently use, and is there already a workflow? Is there a content migration request and plan ? Which type of repurposing strategy – if any – is used at this time…
This can be a very useful tool for a first contact or briefing meeting aiming at defining the scope of the project. It also helps to have a track throughout the ongoing project on what was ‘spontaneously’ agreed was needed or planned or wished at the beginning of the partnership…
